Olive Oil May Protect Brain Function, Lowers Risk of Fatal Dementia
Consuming about half a tablespoon of olive oil each day could reduce the risk of dying from dementia by 28%, according to some new research. In addition, replacing just 1 teaspoon of mayonnaise or margarine with olive oil was associated with an 8-14% lower risk.
“Given that olive oil is the primary source of added fat in a typical Mediterranean diet, we were interested in examining its association with fatal dementia,” said Dr. Anne-Julie Tessier, study author. “[It] may play a beneficial role in cognitive health through its rich content in monounsaturated fatty acids, which may promote neurogenesis.”
This new research builds on another recent study showing that olive oil may help protect the brain, improve memory, and reduce certain biomarkers of Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers believe this may be due in part to its high oleic acid content.
“In general, extra virgin olive oil, which is prepared with a cold mechanical press, is considered the best for health benefits,” said Dr. Domenico Praticò (not involved in the study). Anywhere from ½-5 tablespoons daily has been found beneficial for brain health in studies so far.
FDA Approving Drugs with Fewer Trials, Providing Less Transparency
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is approving more “novel pharmaceutical drugs” based only on single clinical trials, according to recent research from Oregon State University. They are also providing less public disclosure about these trials than was normal just a few years ago.
These findings are based on two studies that analyzed FDA approvals for novel drugs in 2017 and 2022. In 2022, about 65% of drugs were approved based on a single study compared with only 20% in 2016. Results were posted publicly for only 103 of the 413 drug-related studies in 2022.
Part of the reason for this change is the 21st Century Cures Act, which was passed in 2016 with the goal of accelerating the approval of potentially life-saving drugs that could otherwise take years to become available. However, for drugs that have been tested in multiple clinical trials, only the results of two have to be shared, leaving questions about what is being left out.
“We’re not saying that cancer drugs need a lot more studies; just that they should show all the results or trials that are completed,” said Veronica Irvin, study co-author. “It doesn’t mean they wouldn’t get approved, but it means we’d have a more complete picture.”

6 Amazing Health Benefits of Tiny Sesame Seeds
Sesame seeds may be miniscule, but they pack in a lot of nutrients and have been a culinary staple for at least 5,000 years! They also have zinc, vitamin E, and plant compounds that together may help boost immunity. Sesame seeds can even support your heart with their healthy fat content and promote healthy joints. (More)
IBS, Other Digestive Disorders May Increase Risk of Parkinson’s
Parkinson’s disease is a disorder of the central nervous system, resulting in symptoms like slow movement, loss of balance, and tremors. However, some new research indicates that gastrointestinal health could play a role in the development of this disease. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) without diarrhea, constipation, gastroparesis, and swallowing difficulties (dysphagia) were all associated with a higher risk of being diagnosed with Parkinson’s. Exercise Could Improve Sexual Function for Those with Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is one of the more common forms of cancer around the world, and a common side-effect of treatments for prostate cancer is sexual dysfunction. Now, a new study has found that a combination of aerobic exercise and resistance training could help. Overall, those who completed supervised exercise 3 times a week had significant improvements in erectile function and also reported an increase in intercourse satisfaction. (More)
Herbs/Spices Are Tasty, Healthy Substitute for Fat & Salt
The standard American diet is high in saturated fat and sodium, especially as far as processed foods are concerned. Products advertised as low-fat often include extra sugar to make them taste better, which isn’t good for your health, either. A possible solution is to use herbs and spices– all of which have unique health benefits– to add flavor while limiting excess sugar, salt, and saturated fat. A recent study used this approach and found in a taste test that participants liked most healthier dishes with herbs/spices as much as or better than the original. (More)
Health Risks of BHA + BHT and How to Avoid Them
Butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) are commonly used preservatives in food and personal care products, but they aren’t without health concerns. These synthetic antioxidants are currently considered safe for use in limited amounts, but they have been linked to hormone disruption, kidney and lung damage, respiratory irritation, and increased cancer risk in lab and animal studies. They can also cause an allergic reaction in certain people. Read the product label to check for these ingredients. (More)

Bone marrow is a soft, spongy substance found in the center of your bones. An average adult body holds close to 6 lbs. of bone marrow, and it’s responsible for creating billions of red blood cells each day as well as white blood cells and platelets. You can’t really survive without it.
